Big Brothers & Big Sisters is coming to CJH!

Columbia Junior High and Surprise Lake Middle School are excited to announce a partnership with the Tacoma-Pierce County Big Brothers Big Sisters program. We are aiming to offer both school and community based mentorship programs to help close achievement and opportunity gaps faced by our youth.

Our goal is to launch the Big Brothers Big Sisters program in our schools at of start of the 2019-20 school year, but we need your help to achieve this goal. In order to launch the program we will need a minimum of 20 volunteers that are able to dedicate 4 hours per month mentoring a student. Mentors will receive support and training throughout the mentorship process, and will be matched with their mentee based on a number of variables.

Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs have measurable impact on the lives of our youth. In Pierce county alone students enrolled in the program showed an 86% improvement in academic achievement, 92% improved their sense of social acceptance, and a100% maintained risk free behavior (drug/alcohol abuse).

You can help us reach our goal of 20 volunteers in the following ways:

  1. Complete the Volunteer Interest Form on Columbia Junior High Counseling webpage

  2. Spread the word! If you know someone who would be a great mentor please refer them!

  3. Donate to Big Brothers Big Sisters

Studies have shown that children who succeed despite serious hardship have had at least one stable, committed relationship with a supportive adult. With your help we can provide our students with the opportunity to connect with a mentor in a meaningful way that supports the whole student. We greatly appreciate your support in making this program possible for CJH and SLMS students.
